The Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau, which announced the event at a news conference Wednesday morning, said organizers estimate that 15,000 people will attend the event, requiring close to 5,000 rooms in city and other local hotels. Organizers say most attendees are from other cities.
There are currently 14 Rock ’n’ Roll marathons scheduled to take place in the United States next year, with Philadelphia the closest site to Providence. This will be the first time the rock marathon is held in New England since it was started in 1998 in San Diego.
The event is a unique hybrid of athletics and entertainment, with local musicians stationed along the 13.1-mile race route and a well-known entertainer (yet to be announced) headlining an end-of-race concert.
Run by the Competitor Group, a California-based sports marketing firm, the rock marathon also includes a two-day health fair, which convention bureau representatives said will be held at the R.I. Convention Center. The Providence event is scheduled for Aug. 7, and other 2011 sites include Seattle, Dallas and New Orleans. Details on the route of the race and location of the end-of-race concert will be announced at a later date.
