PROVIDENCE, RI — Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis will honor 90 high school students with 2010 Civic Leadership Awards at a State House ceremony this afternoon. The awards are given annually to members of the senior class who make outstanding contributions to their schools and their hometowns.
“This award recognizes students who show an understanding of the importance public service has in a democratic society,” said Mollis. “These students take the principles of civics and put them into action at home and at school.”

Traditionally held in the House Chamber, the event has been moved outdoors to the Smith Street entrance to the State House thanks to more than 430 RSVPs for this year’s ceremony, which will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Mollis asked high schools around the state to select one male and one female member of the Class of 2010 who best met the ideals of the award: public service, leadership ability and academic achievement.
More than 70 high schools ranging from Barrington High to Woonsocket High nominated seniors for the honor. This is the fourth consecutive year Mollis has presented the awards.
Among the students who will be honored is Ruth Saah, a senior at Pawtucket’s Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Performing and Visual Arts. The Sierra Leone native came to the United States at age nine after living for years in a Ghanian refugee camp.
Saah mentors music students, is a member of the National Honor Society, volunteers at her church’s soup kitchen and participates in debate.
