SOUTH KINGSTOWN – A South County Health surgeon is the first in the state to perform surgery using a device that treats a particularly severe form of acid reflux disease.
Dr. Jordan F. Hebert implanted the LINX device in a patient suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, on Jan. 31 at South County Hospital.

As a result of a weakened valve that allows stomach acid to enter the esophagus, patients with GERD experience a range of symptoms, including heartburn, pain, difficulty swallowing and regurgitation.
During the procedure, Hebert, using robotic-assisted technology, implanted the magnetic LINX device to keep stomach acids from entering the patient’s esophagus.
“Being the first surgeon in Rhode Island to perform this treatment was made possible by South County Health bringing the latest generation of diagnostic and therapeutic technology all under one roof,” Hebert said. “This procedure is a real game changer for patients suffering from GERD.”
Although the LINX procedure is new to the Ocean State, it has been Food and Drug Administration-approved for a decade and has been used successfully many times throughout the United States, Hebert said.
