PROVIDENCE – With Halloween rapidly approaching, a new study shows people on average spend $169 on the scary holiday.

LendEdu, an online student loan financing company, released a survey showing that while some people don’t participate in the October holiday, those that do are spending a fair amount of money.

“Like any other notable calendar day, Halloween will always have naysayers, but for the most part, it is seen as an enjoyable night that kicks off the holiday season,” according to the survey. “[And] Halloween is actually a day that will be forcing many to cough up a decent-sized chunk of change.”

The survey asked people 18 years and older how much they expected to spend on the holiday this year. The average cost, totaling $169, was spread out, mostly attributable to three buckets of costs: candy, costumes and decorations.

Costumes are expected to cost the most, averaging $70, followed by candy at $61 and decorations totaling $37.
