MENLO PARK, Calif. – More than half of chief information officer expect real-time workplace communication tools will surpass tradition email in popularity within the next five years, according to a survey by Robert Half Technology.
“Although email remains an important communication tool, the increased use of real-time technologies affects the IT environment,” said John Reed, executive director of Robert Half Technology.
“Employers are looking for the right people to deploy these tools in new ways to increase efficiency. IT professionals should consider the importance of keeping current with real-time technologies in order to stay competitive in the job market.”
Thirteen percent said real-time workplace tools – instant messaging, SharePoint, Yammer, etc., would be “much more popular” in five years and 41 percent said they would be “somewhat more popular.”
Three benefits of real-time tools include: speed – no opening emails, convenience – no need to switch between separate program to communicate – and the social aspect – it has the potential to foster teamwork and camaraderie among employees.
The survey was based on 1,400 telephone interviews with CIOs from a random sample of U.S. companies with 100 or more employees.
