NEWPORT – The popular HBO television show “The Gilded Age,” which was filmed partly at several Newport mansions and on location in Warwick, has been renewed for a third season.
In a Dec. 21 press release less than one week after the airing of the season 2 finale, HBO Executive Vice President of Programming Francesca Orsi said the company was “thrilled to continue this grand tale for a third season.”
"From the costumes to the production design and performances, the show has captivated so many week after week,” he said.
R.I. Film & Television Office Executive Director Steven Feinberg on Friday said he was "ecstatic" when he heard the news.
"It's very exciting and everyone here in the state of Rhode Island welcomes the return of this special series," he said. "It is not only entertaining and educational for historic purposes but provides an additional boost to our international tourism."
HBO spokesperson Yoonie Yang declined to comment when asked Friday for a potential production timeline or whether locations within Rhode Island had been confirmed.
However, Feinberg said has been in conversations with creator Julian Fellowes and the show's production team and understands they will begin filming the next season in summer 2024 "with the hope of bringing the show back to Newport after the height of the summer season as we have done in the past."
According to the RITFO, every $1 of tax credits returns $5.44 in economic activity to the state, not including tourism generated by visitors to the on-screen locations after filming ends. In 2022, $17 million in film tax incentives generated approximately $93 million in economic activity.
Set in late 1800s New York City and Newport, the series has been acclaimed for its rendering of the era's social scene and growing conflicts between elite old money heirs and the newly rich.
“There is much more story to tell,” said President of Universal Television Erin Underhill. "We’re delighted that HBO is giving fans another season of Julian Fellowes’ incredible storytelling. The cast and crew put so much of their heart and soul into the last two seasons, and we’re so proud that all this hard work is paying off with another season.”
