THIELSCH ENGINEERING INC. doesn’t just talk the talk, it walks the walk. It has incorporated participation in walking challenges as a requirement for employees to receive the health care insurance premium.

Along with physical benefits, there are themed challenges, which have become a friendly competition. Thielsch also created a company cookbook, and has implemented several programs to incorporate seven aspects of well-being into its employees: work and home life; physical; emotional; intellectual; social; spiritual; and environmental and occupational.

‘For us, wellness [is] not only about employee wellness [but] about relating something in the company that helps us come together as one.’

“We try to focus on getting people to become involved in various events,” said Frank Tabela Jr., Thielsch’s human resources director.

In response to COVID-19, the Cranston-based engineering firm allowed all laid-off employees to retain their benefits. Thielsch also made a concerted effort to still include these employees in the several wellness challenges it offered.

“We are recognizing as a company we have some responsibility for these employees, and for us it’s been an interesting challenge,” Tabela said.
