Three Fall River firms get training funds

FALL RIVER – Three city firms have been awarded more than $200,000 in state matching funds to train their workers, Gov. Deval L. Patrick announced Tuesday.

The three companies are New England Shirt Co. LLC, which got $99,000; Victor Innovative Textiles LLC, a subsidiary of Victor Innovatex Inc. of Canada, which got $91,800; and Precision Sportswear Inc., which got $16,400, the smallest of the awards.

The trio were among 18 companies statewide that received a total of $1.31 million in Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund grants to train 1,874 workers. The awards were announced by Patrick during a visit to Analogic Corp. in Peabody, Mass.

The governor said the training grants would “help businesses and labor organizations train the commonwealth’s workers, enhancing their existing skills and introducing them to new technologies, production methods and customer-satisfaction tools.”

The announcement came as Rhode Island businesses and labor unions prepared to rally at the Statehouse on Thursday to protest a proposed $1 million cut in the Ocean State’s job-training funds, part of the General Assembly’s plan to close a $219 million deficit in this year’s budget.
