It may be no surprise that a company founded in 1800 has the motto, “Stability, Security, Service.”
The Providence Mutual Fire Insurance Co. has many employees who make those ideals evident through their work at the Warwick-based company for 15, 20, even 30 or more years.
The firm prides itself on its emphasis on seeking and acting upon employee input, being flexible to meet family schedules and encouraging professional development.
“The extent to which our management is engaged is exceptional,” said Human Resources Supervisor Florence Gobin. “Our management cares deeply about the staff, how we do business and the best possible service to our customers. It’s a culture that does not come from one single or large event. It’s built over time.”
There are incentives for contributing to the firm’s financial success. Each staff member can get up to 5 percent of salary in a cash bonus when the company reaches specific financial goals. Management bonuses for meeting specified goals range from 15 to 35 percent.
Employees are encouraged to take job-related courses. The firm pays for books, materials, registration and exams. To make learning sweeter, the company tacks on a reward of $50 to $300 when the employee successfully passes the course.
An outstanding achievement can earn an employee between $50 to $100, with no limit on how many times they can receive the award.
Beginning in July, benefits will be extended to same sex domestic partners, making The Providence Mutual Fire Insurance Company the first in its group association plan to do so. •
