MIDDLETOWN – Towerstream, a 4G-service provider, said its fixed wireless networks in New York and Boston held up “brilliantly” during Hurricane Irene.
The company also opened up its pilot WiFi network to Manhattan residents from 6 p.m. Friday through the end of New York’s declared state of emergency.

“We understand the importance of keeping people connected during vicious weather events,” said CEO Jeff Thompson. “Our purpose is to give New Yorkers additional network capacity in the event other networks become strained.”
Users had unlimited free, unlimited WiFi access throughout the storm. Towerstream said its network was “extremely well received” and hosted several thousand users.
The Boston and New York networks were functional 100 percent of the time during Irene, a spokesman confirmed.
