MIDDLETOWN – Towerstream, a 4G-service provider, announced plans to expand its Wi-Fi network initiative in Manhattan and build additional “hotzones” throughout New York City, San Francisco and Chicago.
Towerstream deployed a pilot Wi-Fi network in Midtown Manhattan to explore using Wi-Fi as a supplement to mobile data offloading in areas with high levels of mobile broadband usage, the company said in a news release on Jan. 4.
“Towerstream’s initial Wi-Fi pilot has received an outstanding response and supports a high quantity of data traffic,” said CEO Jeff Thompson, noting the network supported an average of 250,000 connections and more than one terabyte of data transferred per day. The new initiative has up to 200 mbps of available bandwidth per location.
Separately, Towerstream announced it had completed the acquisition of substantially all of Pipeline’s Wireless ‘Pop’s network infrastructure, customer contracts and related assets in the Boston, Fall River and New Bedford markets.
