Tia Bush | Amgen Inc. vice president for site operations in West Greenwich and Woburn, Mass.
I have the pleasure of leading a team of scientists and professionals whose critical mission is to serve the needs of our patients by using science to transform medicine. It is a privilege and a responsibility that is both inspirational and daunting.
My purpose is to coach my team so they can achieve their full potential. It may be cliché but I truly believe it. This past year I have seen my team deliver on an unprecedented number of goals while achieving world-class performance in many areas that many didn’t believe could be achieved.
This was done by working as a high-performing team, focused on our mission and trusting in their ability to deliver. I never once lost confidence, and made certain that they knew I remained confident even when things got tough.
As a seasoned leader, I find myself in an exceptional period of time in my career. I have had great leadership role models in my career, and I try to emulate their best practices. But I can finally say I’ve found my authentic leadership – and it is based on building trust and empowering my team. I am inspired by this quote:
• Perfection is not attainable but if we choose perfection, we can catch excellence.
Every day I am committed to being a better leader than the day before. No longer is it about me but the hard work and sacrifice of our staff that make it all happen. I just provide the tools and environment that make them soar.
