WalletHub: R.I. 6th best state for jobs

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranks as the sixth best state in the nation for jobs in a WalletHub report released Wednesday.

The study considered more than 35 metrics across key indicators including job-market strength, opportunity and economic vitality.

Rhode Island ranked seventh in the nation for employment growth, 17th in unemployment rate, second for average length or workweek in hours, 29th in average commute time and first in percentage of residents fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Washington ranked No. 1 overall in the study, followed by Vermont, New Hampshire, Colorado and Minnesota. Rhode Island ranked third in New England, behind Vermont and New Hampshire. Massachusetts was fourth in New England and seventh overall.

West Virginia was ranked 50th, just below Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas.

The report highlighted that Rhode Island ranked tied for second with Vermont and Oregon as having the shortest time spent working each week, behind Utah.

New Hampshire was the top state in the nation for job opportunities and unemployment rate, while California was top for employment growth. Indiana was first for monthly average starting salary. Virginia ranked first for median annual income.
