Washington Trust collects 8.7 tons of peanut butter during 2021 donation drive

WESTERLY – The Washington Trust Co. collected 8.7 tons of peanut butter through monetary and in-kind donations during its annual fundraiser, according to a news release.

Unlike in years past, the 21st annual Peanut Butter Drive used an online fundraiser rather than in-branch collection jars to raise money for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and its local food pantry partners across the state, the release stated.

Company employees contributed $7,000 during a kickoff fundraiser, with a total of more than $16,000 raised, including community donations. Every $5 raised will help the food bank buy five jars of peanut butter for families in need, the release stated.

Workers and community members could also donate jars of peanut butter to any of the company’s local food bank partners. More than 1,000 pounds of peanut butter were donated.

Over the last 21 years, the donation drive has collected more than 151 tons of peanut butter – equal to 4.8 million peanut butter sandwiches.
