Richard W. Rose, who overcame challenges growing up in South Providence to become an Assistant US Attorney and the second black federal prosecutor in RI history, is the 2014 recipient of Wheeler’s annual Community Spirit Award for his work with numerous civic and community groups. Wheeler’s Community Spirit Award was established in 2004 to recognize persons in the Providence community who advocate for those who have fewer opportunities. The award was presented to Rose at the School’s popular annual community event — the Students Involved In Cultural Awareness (SICA) Family Potluck on February 19.  Past recipients of the Wheeler Community Spirit Award include Teny Gross of the RI Institute for the Study and Practice of Non-Violence, Superior Court Judge Ed Clifton, educator Rob DeBlois, master storyteller Len Cabral, United Way executive Armeather Gibbs, health leader Dr. Pablo Rodriguez, and educator/coach G. Gail Davis, Coordinator of the Student-Athlete Center at Rhode Island College.
