Women’s magazine started in R.I.

WARWICK – A local woman has started a new publication for women, Southern New England Woman Magazine, that recently distributed its first issue in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

“I knew there was a need for a women’s magazine, but I did not realize there was that much of a need,” said founder Pat Paolino Cruz, a professional event planner and former photographer.

Cruz began the magazine venture without financial backers, she said, relying on the sale of advertisements to support the full-color glossy, which is scheduled to come out every quarter.

Some 20,000 copies of the free 60-page magazine’s first issue were distributed about two weeks ago at 750 locations, and “they’re all gone,” Cruz said.

Although Cruz acknowledged this was a difficult time economically to begin a magazine, she suggested the timing was right for an “inspirational, motivational” publication aimed at women. “This is the time to do it, when everybody needs a little pick-me-up,” she said.

A launch party for the magazine was held on April 23 at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence.

Cruz said she is working with freelance writers and photographers from across the country, although contributors are not being paid “at this time,” according to the magazine’s Facebook page. The second issue, which will feature a color layout on the region’s vineyards, is due out in July.

Cruz said she also plans to establish an interactive website and intends to stage a series of special events for women in conjunction with the magazine.

Cruz is a promoter of the Women’s Conference 2010, which was held in February at the R.I. Convention Center, and of the Running in Heels Business Networking Series for Men and Women. She is co-producer of the Southern New England Women’s Expo and the Spectacular Bridal Event, a bridal show now in its ninth year held in Rhode Island on the weekend after Thanksgiving.
