LINCOLN – The MacColl YMCA broke ground Saturday on a $13 million expansion and renovation project while the Barrington Y announced its own project last week.
At the MacColl Y in Lincoln, a new two-story, 50,000-square-foot facility will house a family pool, a fitness center, locker rooms, a gymnasium, a teen center, a pre-school play center and a climbing wall.
The Y also plans to renovate two existing buildings to provide more space for pre-school and teen programming and room for a wellness center with treadmills, elliptical cross trainers, weight machines and other fitness equipment.
Outside, MacColl said it would expand parking and undertake landscaping and natural habitat improvements.
Construction is anticipated to create 200 jobs and wrap up by summer. Once opened, the new MacColl YMCA will have approximately 75 new permanent jobs.
Also last week, the Bayside YMCA in Barrington announced plans for a $6.4 million aquatic center. The center will also include a family splash area, locker rooms and an expanded lobby.
“We are very excited to be moving into construction,” Executive Director Joe Martino said. “This is the culmination of the hard work and dedication of countless individuals. Our goal when we started was to better serve the community and this marks a major step in achieving that goal.”
Work is slated to begin this fall and take 10 months to complete.
