J.L. “Lynn” Singleton | Providence Performing Arts Center CEO and president
Here are some thoughts I have consistently found to be true over my decades in the theater business:
• “It’s all about the show.” It all starts with what’s being presented on stage.
• “Deal with the problem, not the symptom.” Organizational change is always difficult, but the role of the CEO is not only to manage but to lead. That said, I always recommend making reversible changes quickly and irreversible ones slowly.
• “All history is biography.” Relationships in both your personal and professional life are crucial. Spend time developing, expanding and maintaining them.
• “You win with good people.” Especially ones who treat the organization like it’s their own business. Your job is to get them all moving the organization in the same direction.
• “Return every phone call.” Especially complaints; these are actually the most important ones. You’d be surprised how disarming it is to listen intently, then ask, “OK, what’s going to make you happy?”
• “Patrons perceive any issue they encounter while attending a performance as your responsibility.” The patron holds you accountable and responsible for everything in your purview, so stay attuned to that. Regardless, treat others politely and fairly.
Kindness is a virtue.
And never be afraid to say, “I don’t know, let me find out” or “What do you think?”
