More than 450 people employed in construction in Rhode Island attended a workplace safety fair last Tuesday hosted by the Beacon Mutual Insurance Co. that aimed to reduce job-related injuries – some of which, in this industry, can be crippling or fatal.
The fair, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Providence-Warwick, included 10 training sessions – with each person able to attend up to four – covering a wide range of safety issues: aerial lift safety, CPR certification, respirator training, hand and power tool safety, electrical safety training and fall protection.
“I am very pleased with the success of our first Beacon Builders Safety Fair event,” said CEO James V. Rosati. “As part of Beacon’s larger commitment to overall workplace safety, we do everything we can to protect our insureds and their employees. The fair was designed to take preventative action and help those in the construction industry avoid injuries on the job – something that, most importantly, saves lives and at the same time lowers employer costs.”
In addition to the workshops, Beacon invited several manufacturing and equipment company representatives to demonstrate their products throughout the day.
Also on hand were officials from the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), the R.I. Committee on Occupational Health and Safety, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training’s Workers’ Compensation and Compensation Fraud and Compliance units, the Safety Association of Rhode Island and the R.I. Fire Marshal’s office.
