PROVIDENCE – All offices of the Rhode Island Divison of Motor Vehicles will reopen Tuesday, July 18, welcoming visitors on a walk-in basis while the division continues with the launch of its new computer system. While the systems are expected to be functional at all locations, longer wait times can also be anticipated.
Some Rhode Islanders may not need to brave the long lines of their local DMV if the fulfill certain conditions. DMV Administrator Walter R. Craddock, with permission from the General Assembly, has extended the deadline for July license, ID and registration renewals to Sept. 30, 2017. A card with a July expiration will be valid through this time.

Some transactions may also take place on the DMV’s website at DMV.RI.GOV; some banking fees may be waived. Finally, some DMV transactions may take place at AAA locations throughout the state as an alternative.
The return to regular operation has been implemented in stages, Craddock said, adding that delays may be expected despite the staggering of services.
“We want to caution Rhode Islanders that we expect heavy customer transaction volume at all our offices for the remainder of July, Craddock said. “We ask Rhode Islanders for their cooperation and patience as we complete this necessary infrastructure improvement.”
