U.S. Internet purchases rose 23.1
percent in the second quarter from the same three months last year
to $15.7 billion, a government report showed.
The increase compares with a 28.1 percent year-over-year rise
in online sales transactions in the first quarter, the Commerce
Department said in Washington. Total retail sales for the second
quarter were $919 billion, up 7.8 percent from the same three
months last year.

Year-over-year Internet sales have increased in four of the
last five quarters. Online commerce accounted for 1.7 percent of
all retail sales from April through June compared with 1.9 percent
in the first quarter.
The government surveys about 11,000 businesses such as mail
order and online retailers, furniture stores, building materials
dealers, new car dealers, groceries and department and apparel
stores. Online travel services, financial brokers and ticket sales
agencies were not included.
