NEWPORT – Nine months after launching its service connecting passengers to drivers of luxury cars in Providence, San Francisco-based Uber announced Friday it will expand its Rhode Island footprint to include Newport and Narragansett.
News of the expansion followed another announcement Friday that Uber has recently closed a $1.2 billion financing round, bringing the company’s total valuation to $17 billion. The 4-year-old startup now operates in 128 cities in 37 countries around the world and claims responsibility for the creation of 20,000 new jobs each month.

“With our growth and expansion, the company has evolved from being a scrappy Silicon Valley tech startup to being a way of life for millions of people in cities around the world,” wrote Travis Kalanick, Uber co-founder and CEO, in a blog post. “This ‘Uber’ way of life is really a reflection of our mission to turn ground transportation into a seamless service and to enable a transportation alternative in cities that makes car ownership a thing of the past.”
To celebrate the expansion of its services in Newport, Uber will offer two free rides to passengers in Newport between 9 a.m. on Friday, June 6, and 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 8. Uber has also partnered with local restaurants and clubs in Newport – including Busker’s Irish Pub, Midtown Oyster, Newport Storm brewery and nightclub Studio 3 – to offer exclusive discounts on merchandise and cover charges for passengers who show their Uber trip receipts.
