Patrick T. Kelly, Ph.D. is the Michael A. Ruane Endowed Professor of Accountancy and the Director of the Ethics in Business Education Program at Providence College. He has been teaching college students for over 35 years. He has recently taught in both the undergraduate and graduate programs and his courses include Accounting Ethics, Cost Accounting, and Government & Nonprofit Accounting. He has been very active in the American Accounting Association Public Interest, Ethics, and Sustainability Section, serving as Section Chair twice and in other Section leadership positions.

Dr. Kelly’s research interests involve accounting ethics, education, and public interest issues. His work ranges from developing ethical leaders for the accounting profession by integrating leadership topics into ethics courses, to minimizing workplace fraud and other problem gambling social costs associated with casino gambling, sports betting, and online gambling. His work has been published in Accounting and the Public Interest, Issues in Accounting Education, and Research on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting.   

Prior to earning his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, he served in the Coast Guard for over twenty years, retiring as a Commander. He also taught at the Coast Guard Academy for ten years, where he served as the Director of the Leadership and Character Development Program for six years. He earned his MBA in Accounting from New York University and his undergraduate degree in Management from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. In addition to teaching and research awards from the School of Business, his awards include the American Accounting Association Excellence in Accounting Education Award, the American Accounting Association Public Interest Section Distinguished Service Award, and the Providence College Faculty Service Award.
