Mass. DOT recognized as ‘bicycle friendly’

BOSTON – The Mass. Department of Transportation has become the first transportation agency in the nation recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists.
The league last week announced 67 awards nationally to businesses, cities, nonprofits and government agencies, including a bronze medal to the department for encouraging a bike-friendly atmosphere for customers and employees.
According to a news release, the DOT has earned its bronze medal through such initiatives as Bay State Bike Week, the only such weeklong, statewide bicycling education and awareness promotion in the nation. MassDOT has encouraged more bicycling by adding parking rack facilities at its Boston headquarters and making “pool” bikes available for employees to ride to a meeting or a worksite. Each MassDOT Highway Division District Office has designated a staff member as bicycle-and-pedestrian coordinator. &#8226
