NORTH KINGSTOWN – OSHEAN said it recently signed an Enterprise Licensing Agreement with VMware Inc. that will allow its members to virtualize IT servers and desktops.
“This initiative will help Rhode Island’s colleges, universities, hospitals, schools and government agencies to stretch existing resources,” said George Loftus, president of the he nonprofit consortium of local organizations building a high-capacity broadband network throughout the state. “This program represents a critical tool for Rhode Island’s anchor institutions to operate more efficiently and implement new technologies through virtualization.”

The Community College of Rhode Island will be the first school in the state to implement virtual desktops across all of its campuses – more than 3,000 virtual desktop seats for use by faculty and students.
The agreement is projected to save $2.5 million for purchase of VMware products and renewal fees for OSHEAN members which include colleges, hospitals, state and municipal offices and K-12 schools.
“This relationship with OSHEAN will allow us to streamline our process to create efficiencies for the benefit of taxpayers in Middletown,” said Matt Wainwright, Middletown CIO and IT director. “We’re hoping to make remote access available to all of our employees. Sharing the cost of applications will help us achieve that goal.”
