PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices have fallen for the third week in a row as the cost of a gallon declined 4 cents in Rhode Island, AAA Southern New England reported yesterday.
The auto club’s July 13 survey found the average price of self-serve, unleaded regular at Ocean State stations was $2.63 per gallon. That was down 4 cents from the average last week and a decline of 7 cents since three weeks ago. The price is up 97 cents since the start of the year.

The cost of gas surged this spring as the market price of crude oil rose, but prices have been falling in recent weeks amid worrying signs for the global economy.
In its survey, AAA found prices in Rhode Island ranging from $2.45 to $2.76 per gallon for unleaded regular. At $2.63, the average price per gallon in Rhode Island is 11 cents higher than the average price nationwide of $2.52.
A year ago, gas prices in Rhode Island were near an all-time high (not adjusted for inflation) of $4.09 per gallon, according to AAA.
In Massachusetts, the survey found the average price of self-serve, unleaded regular was $2.56 per gallon, down 3 cents from last week but 4 cents above the national average.
At stations in Rhode Island this week, the survey found average self-serve prices of $2.78 per gallon for midgrade unleaded, $2.87 for premium unleaded gasoline and $2.66 for diesel.
