PROVIDENCE – The Providence Public Library today announced it has received a $150,400 grant from The Champlin Foundations, for a variety of service enhancements throughout the library system.
The library said the award has been allocated as follows:
• $86,700 for system-wide audiovisual collections and services
• $45,000 for self-checkout machines at the Central Library, on Empire Street
• $18,700 for copy machines for public use at all libraries

An additional Champlin grant in the amount of $89,075, which was awarded to the statewide Cooperating Libraries Automated Network (CLAN) on the PPL’s behalf, will go toward technology upgrades throughout the PPL’s 10-library system.
“The Champlin Foundations’ strong and ongoing support of the Providence Public Library is a real affirmation of the Library’s important role in the community,” said Dale Thompson, library director. “PPL continually strives to meet our patrons’ needs with the latest materials and services possible.
“The Champlin Foundations’ renewed generosity, as exhibited through this year’s grant, makes so much more possible, enabling both improvements in and enhancements of valuable library services. In particular, this year’s grant helps us expand our ability to offer patrons new and popular services, such as downloadable audio books, and to make audiovisual materials more accessible.
“Further, the PPL grant made through the CLAN system helps us to continue to provide the necessary and valued access to technology for residents of Providence and all Rhode Island,” Thompson said.
The Providence Public Library is a 130-year-old private, nonprofit library. The PPL serves as a public library for the City of Providence, providing free information resources, education and community services. It also is the Statewide Reference Resource Center, serving all Rhode Islanders with educational, cultural enrichment and economic advancement opportunities.
