Law exempts churches from sprinkler rules

A new law enacted July 4 requires the state to develop a separate fire code for places of worship, so they won’t necessarily be required to install sprinklers.

Previously, no distinction was made for churches in the fire code. They have beensubject to the same rules as other places of assembly, and as such, would soon be required to have sprinkler systems if they have capacities greater than 300 people.

According to sponsors Sen. Susan Sosnowski, D-South Kingstown, and Rep. Peter T. Ginaitt, D-Warwick, the new law is meant to ease the financial burden on cash-strapped churches, but is also necessary because churches, which generally don’t serve alcohol, are fairly well-lit and usually have wide aisles leading toward exits, very different from nightclubs and restaurants.
