WASHINGTON – Rhode Island ranked 45th in the country in volunteering rate, at 24.9 percent, from 2003 to 2005, according to a first-ever federal report released this week by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Rhode Island tied with Arizona. Massachusetts was ranked 36th at 27 percent.
Rhode Island’s volunteer rate was below the Northeast’s three-year rate of 26.4 percent, and lower than the national volunteer rate, which was measured at 28.8 percent.

Nationally, women volunteer at a higher rate than men, and women with children and women who work have higher volunteer rates than other women, the report said.
The survey is considered the first study to give a detailed breakdown of America’s volunteering habits and patterns by state and region. The full report is available at www.nationalservice.gov.
