RI Food Bank donations down

The Rhode Island Community Foodbank announced on Wednesday that donations are down 19 percent compared to the same time last year. The food bank is encountering a shortfall of monetary contributions that play a critical role in helping to obtain the food that so many Rhode Islanders need.

“So many people have given generously to the devastating disasters this year on top of paying more for fuel and home utilities than ever before,” said Bernie Beaudreau, executive director. “But, if you are in a position to make a charitable contribution, now is a perfect time as your gift will make a difference for struggling Rhode Islanders.”

Currently, the food bank is feeding 51,000 Rhode Islanders each month. A new report from the United States Department of Agriculture reveals a 60 percent increasing hunger in the state in just six years. Over 43,500 – 4.2 percent of the state – are experiencing hunger and are routinely missing meals. Census data reveals that over 121,000 Rhode Islanders live below the poverty line and almost a third of those are children. The state’s child poverty rate has grown to 21 percent, the highest in New England.
