A Providence nanobiotechnology company has entered an agreement with Brown University that will help it commercialize its inventions for bioanalytical applications. NABsys was granted exclusive worldwide rights to certain intellectual property developed at Brown as part of the transaction, the company said in a release. Brown was issued equity in the company as part of the deal.
NABsys is a single-molecule biophysics company that is working to commercialize nanopores for bioanalytical applications.

NABsys’ founding technology was developed by Xinsheng Sean Ling, Associate Professor of Physics at Brown and co-founder of NABsys.
Ling recently received a $1.55 million National Science Foundation grant to further research of solid-state nanopores. The research is being done at Brown with collaboration from Harvard University.
“While the University setting affords us an ideal opportunity to pursue the NSF-funded research, I think it is equally important to have a commercial partner taking the lead in attracting the additional resources and talent necessary to make this technology a commercial reality,” Ling said.
Charles Kingdon, Associate Vice President, Brown Technology Partnerships said the NABsys deal is a sign of the university’s commitment to entrepreneurships.

NABsys’ research is a catalyst for delivering highly personalized medical treatment, Bready said. The company is analyzing DNA and the human genome using faster and more efficient methods. The technique is useful because the more a doctor knows about a person’s genes – what diseases they may be prone to and how certain medicines may affect them – the more efficiently they can treat them.
“It can really change how medicine is practiced,” Bready said.
