Dowpharma, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, announced on July 30 plans to close its biopharmaceutical contract manufacturing facility in Smithfield.
According to the company, Dowpharma will continue to develop its biopharmaceutical contract manufacturing business by building on its process development capability at Dow’s biotechnology center in San Diego and through partnerships.

Dow said the decision to close the Smithfield facility, formerly owned by Collaborative BioAlliance, was due to changes in the biotech industry, specifically around mammalian cell culture technology.
Dow is now exploring options to sell the property. Specific negotiations are not being disclosed. Approximately 62 employees will be affected by the closure, but according to the company, eligible employees will be offered severance and transition support assistance. The facility is expected to close at the end of September, Dow said.
