Verizon Communications Inc. and
unions representing 80,000 workers postponed contract talks with
a federal mediator to today after a blackout in the Northeastern
U.S. and Canada last week.
Verizon, the largest U.S. local-phone company, and its
unions were scheduled to meet with Peter Hurtgen of the Federal
Mediation and Conciliation Service in Washington this morning,
Candice Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Communication Workers of
America, said.

The meeting with Hurtgen would have been the first with the
mediator in a week. More than two dozen regional bargaining
groups began meeting Tuesday to discuss Verizon proposals,
including local work rules. Negotiations on the contracts, which
expired Aug. 3, have focused on health-care costs, job security
and the unionization of New York-based Verizon’s wireless and
high-speed Internet businesses.
Late in the day, Johnson said the two sides had talked by
phone, and would meet with the mediator Monday.
