The number of Americans
filing for state unemployment benefits fell to the lowest since
the first week of February, suggesting the pace of firings may be
easing.
First-time jobless claims fell by 25,000 to 402,000 in the
week ended Saturday, the Labor Department said. It was the sixth
straight week of claims above 400,000, the reading that some
economists say signals a weak job market.

“Businesses are still reluctant to hire new workers,
although the moderation in initial claims suggests that they’ve
tempered layoffs,” said Ryan Brecht of MMS International, an
economic consulting firm in Belmont, Calif.
