Staples: earnings to increase 20% next year

Staples Inc., the second-largest U.S. office-products retailer, expects
earnings per share to increase 20 percent next year on rising
sales to small businesses.

The company is forecast to earn 83 cents a share in the
fiscal year ending in January and 97 cents in fiscal 2004,
according to the average estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson
First Call. That is a 17 percent increase. Staples had net income
of about $265 million, or 40 cents, in fiscal 2002.

Sales will rise next year by a `high single” digit
percentage rate, said Chief Financial Officer John Mahoney during
a presentation to analysts that was broadcast on the Internet.
Spokeswoman Deborah Hohler said more specific information was not
available.
