BOSTON – John Hancock Financial Services announced that it would lay off 160 employees at its headquarters here, approximately 3.5 percent of the staff in its signature tower here, the Boston Globe reported. The company has been in a cost reduction mode since it went public two years ago. A provision in the demutualization plan designed to prevent a takeover of the now public company expires next month.
