PROVIDENCE – As a result of the contract agreement the state administration reached with Blue Cross & Blue Shield, state employees will be paying higher co-pays for prescription drugs. Co-payments for prescriptions that had been zero for generic drugs will now be $5; for brand-name drugs, the co-payment will rise from $5 to $10; and for so-called “non-preferred” drugs, such as Viagra, the co-payment will double from $10 to $20, the Associated Press reported. The three-year contract covering 15,495 current employees and 9,534 retirees takes effect Jan. 1, 2002 and expires in December 2004.
