Nordstrom reports third quarter profit

Nordstrom Inc. announced a quarterly profit compared with a year-ago loss, despite sales that were hurt by the slowing U.S. economy and fallout from the Sept. 11 attacks.

Nordstrom also said on a conference call with analysts that it plans to cut capital expenditures and slow its store expansion plans.

The retailer net earnings in its fiscal third quarter, ended Oct. 31, were $10.5 million, or 8 cents a diluted share, compared with a loss of $3.3 million, or 3 cents a share, a year ago.

Earnings for the third quarter of 2000 excluding a pre-tax charge of $44 million were $23.4 million or 18 cents a share.
