DALLAS — Texas Instruments Inc. said it plans to idle two of its Dallas manufacturing plants within the next few weeks, affecting about 1,800 workers.
According to reports, Texas Instruments plans to idle a plant that produces analog computer chips from July 2 through July 23, and plans to briefly shut down a slightly smaller chip facility from June 30 to July 7.

The decision is part of cost reduction measures in response to a weakened demand for semiconductors. The plant to be idled from July 2 through July 23 employs about 1,000 workers, while the other plant employs about 800 workers. According to a Texas Instrument spokeswoman, most workers would take vacation time, but some could choose to take unpaid leave.
Texas Instruments has five fabrication plants in Dallas, where the company is headquartered. In April, the company announced it would lay off 2,500 workers, or 6 percent of its workforce. Some of those cuts affected workers at the Texas Instruments Sensors & Controls plant in Attleboro, Mass. Earlier this year, the company closed a plant in Santa Cruz, Calif., began a voluntary retirement program, announced a hiring freeze and cut discretionary spending.
