ATLANTA and SAN DIEGO — United Parcel Service plans to acquire the assets of U.S. Office Products subsidiary Mail Boxes Etc. (MBE), in a transaction both companies said is expected to close as soon as possible.
According to a statement released by MBE, MBE is the world’s largest franchisor of independently owned and operated business, communication and shipping centers worldwide. MBE and UPS have worked together for more than 20 years, the statement said.

A subsidiary of UPS will conduct MBE business, with MBE franchises maintaining “the entrepreneurial spirit and independence they need to run their businesses and provide world-class service options to their customers,” MBE president and CEO Jim Amos said in the statement.
As for the acquisition’s effect on individual franchises, one MBE owner looks forward to it.
“I see [the acquisition] as very positive,” Bob Gilson, owner of an MBE store on Putnam Pike in Smithfield, told PBN.com. “They understand our business. [Former owner] U.S. Office Products did not.”
