Pay generous for hospital execs

According to 1997-98 compensations reports for management employees in hospital, nursing home and home health management companies across the country, the average salary of a hospital chief executive officer is $302,972 — with a bonus of $60,697. The average salary of a hospital chief operating officer is $270,883, with a bonus of $75,893. Yet in Rhode Island, as state officials continue to grapple with the proposed merger of Lifespan and Care New England and hospitals suffer annual losses in the millions, 990 tax returns for Oct. 1, 1997 through Sept. 30, 1998 indicate that hospital officials in Rhode Island well exceed the midpoint.

And the granddaddy of them all, according to tax documents supplied to the state Department of Health, was former Lifespan CEO William Kreykes, who in 1997-98 was paid $474,785 in salary, $1million in contractual payments, lump sum deferred compensation of $920,170, deferred compensation of $522,138 and $62,259 in benefits and other compensation – for a total $2,979,352. Kreykes also received $41,667 for professional services after he left Lifespan, but continued to be on the board of directors.

During that same period, current Lifespan CEO George Vecchione was paid $25,962 in salary (for one month — Sept. 1 through Sept. 30, 1998) as well as $228,392 in benefits, which included a one-time sum of $227,000 paid in October of 1998 in lieu of effectively earned non-vested dollars. Vecchione also received, prior to his hiring as CEO, consultant fees totaling $200,000 – which brought his compensation for that period to $454,354.

Although this tax information is the most recent available, many of the executives listed here have since left the institutions they were working for. Still, the salaries listed provide some understanding of how top hospital executives are paid.
