AAA: R.I. gas prices up 3 cents, Mass. gas rises 2 cents

PROVIDENCE – The average price of regular gasoline in Rhode Island increased 3 cents this week to $2.56 per gallon, 5 cents below the national average of $2.61 per gallon, according to AAA Northeast Monday.

The price of regular gasoline is 33 cents higher than one year prior, when it was $2.23 per gallon.

“With the arrival of spring, gas prices both locally and nationwide immediately became more expensive,” said Lloyd Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs, in a statement. “Right now, we are seeing the market starting to purge winter-blend gasoline to make room for the more expensive summer blend.”

Prices ranged 14 cents in the Ocean State from $2.49 to $2.63 per gallon.

  • Midgrade gasoline averaged $2.88 this week, ranging from $2.79 to $2.99 per gallon.
  • Premium gasoline averaged $3.05 per gallon, ranging from $2.89 to $3.12 per gallon.
  • Diesel fuel averaged $2.99 this week, ranging from $2.92 to $3.05 per gallon.

In Massachusetts, regular gas averaged $2.50 per gallon, 2 cents higher than one week prior and 11 cents below the national average.

Prices in Massachusetts ranged 40 cents, from $2.39 to $2.79. Last year at this time, prices averaged 33 cents lower at $2.17 per gallon.

  • Midgrade gas in Massachusetts averaged $2.76 this week, ranging from $2.52 to $2.99 per gallon.
  • Premium gas in Massachusetts averaged $2.93 per gallon, ranging from $2.70 to $3.25 per gallon.
  • Diesel fuel in the Bay State averaged $2.96 this week, ranging from $2.79 to $3.09 per gallon.
