Access Solutions International folds

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Access Solutions International Inc. announced Sept. 17 that it plans to liquidate its remaining assets and cease operations.

The company said it plans to sell its remaining assets, including inventory, property, equipment and intellectual property, discharge its liabilities and distribute the net proceeds to stockholders. The announcement came after a lengthy effort to find a potential buyer for the entire company, a statement from the company reads.

Access Solutions said that it has sold its remaining hardware and software maintenance contracts to Computer Upgrade Corp. of Corona, Calif., a privately held full-service integrator. The sale is for consideration of one-half of the gross margin on the contracts from July 1, 2002 through July 1, 2004.

During the period leading up to the announcement, Access Solutions says it worked to maximize business efficiencies and eliminate as many operating expenses as it could in an effort to conserve cash, service existing customers and to provide more time to examine all options.

The board of directors also considered whether to continue maintaining operations, but determined that the “lack of sales, the lack of personnel remaining at the company, the lack of demand for its product and the downturn in the company’s market” made its future too murky.

The plan of liquidation and dissolution still is subject to shareholder approval.

Commission to study online
vehicle registration

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Islanders might someday have a shortcut to the front of the line to register their vehicles. A joint legislative study commission soon will meet to study the possibility of online vehicle registration in the state, according to a recent news release from the General Assembly.

The commission, which will study all aspects of online vehicle registration, is expected to report its findings to the General Assembly by Jan. 15. The nine-member special commission consists of three members of both the House and Senate, the director of the state Division of Taxation, the director of the Division of Motor Vehicles and the director of the Rhode Island Automobiles Association.

Rep. Rene R. Menard, a Democrat representing Lincoln and Cumberland who sponsored the legislation, said online vehicle registration is working well in other states, including Massachusetts. Some states charge a fee for online registration, while others offer a discount to those who use the online service.
