SCITUATE – The R.I. State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit has issued a fine of $57,000 to Bay Crane Northeast of Smithfield, the Department of Public Safety announced on Tuesday.

“This is believed to be the largest fine ever issued for a motor vehicle violation in Rhode Island,” DPS said in a news release Tuesday evening.

The company owns and operates a tractor-trailer truck that was stopped on Route 4 in East Greenwich on June 27 for hauling a generator that exceeded the weight limits for state roadways.

According to WJAR-TV NBC 10, The tractor-trailer remained in Warwick for several days as officials plotted a safe course for the truck to continue. The R.I. Department of Transportation found a route through western Rhode Island for the truck, which ultimately delivered the generator to an energy company in Medway, Mass.
