Bill offers adoption aid for employees

Sen. John J. Tassoni Jr., D-Dist. 29 of Smithfield and Glocester want to give companies an opportunity to help employees with adoption costs. The legislation (S-0524), introduced this year would provide a tax credit for employers who contribute toward or subsidize the cost of adoptions by their employees.

“Two compelling reasons for a company to offer adoption benefits are fairness and equity,” Tassoni said. “Employees who become parents through adoption should receive benefits comparable to those who have children biologically. Yet while maternity benefits are pretty standard in more health care programs, adoption has a long way to go.”
