PROVIDENCE – Gov. Donald L. Carcieri has announced plans to build a new R.I. State Police headquarters at the site of the Scituate barracks, a move the governor said will be $36 million less than the previously planned location in Cranston.
Earlier plans would’ve located the new state police headquarters in the Pastore Complex, a project that was expected to cost taxpayers $63 million. The Scituate proposal would cost roughly $27 million.
In addition, Carcieri said in a news release, building the facility in Scituate offers several other advantages. Under the original proposal, barracks in Wickford and Chepachet would have been shuttered and dispatching operations at all barracks would have been moved to the Cranston facility. With the Scituate headquarters, only the Chepachet barracks would be closed, with all dispatching operations remaining in their respective homes. Also, placing the facility in Scituate would allow for further expansion.
