And while we are concerned about the attorney general’s attacks on the media, we applaud Atty. Gen. Jeffrey B. Pine for his recent decision that derails the proposed takeover of three Rhode Island hospitals by a Boston healthcare network.
We understand that mergers are an important way for hospitals to survive mounting financial pressures. But we agree with the attorney general that the Care New England-CareGroup merger left too much unsettled. It would have been very difficult to support an arrangement that Pine says would:

- give Care New England only nine of 38 seats on the CareGroup board of directors, with no assurance they would keep those seats in the future.
- give CareGroup, whose flagship hospital is the prominent Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, power to amend Care New England bylaws.
- require Care New England’s member hospitals to pay a $25 million admission charge to CareGroup, with no guarantee that the money would be spent in Rhode Island.
