WARWICK – An anonymous donor has gifted the Community College of Rhode Island the largest individual private financial award in the college’s 60-year history to launch a groundbreaking pilot program to boost student success and accelerate graduation pathways.
CCRI Interim President Rosemary A. Costigan, along with state elected officials announced on Thursday during the college’s opening day convocation for faculty and staff, announced that the college received a $2 million anonymous gift to fund the three-year CCRI Advantage pilot initiative.
CCRI says the seven-week program, inspired by the City University of New York’s CUNY Start program, will provide students with personalized academic coaching, targeted tutoring and comprehensive support services. The free program will help students transition into credit-bearing coursework at the college during the second half of their first semester, CCRI says.
“This program is more than just a steppingstone; it's a launchpad for our students,” Costigan said in a statement. “By providing tailored support from day one, CCRI Advantage exemplifies our commitment to innovative approaches that meet our students where they are.”
CCRI says the gift will help cover tuition costs, laptops, course materials, transportation and other incidental expenses. That support, the college says, will ensure students can prepare for college gateway courses without incurring more expenses and nontransferable credits.
“As CCRI continues to innovate and expand its offerings, the college remains committed to its mission of providing accessible, high-quality education that meets the evolving needs of its students and the workforce,” Costigan said. “The CCRI Advantage program, supported by this unprecedented gift, is a testament to that commitment and a beacon of hope for students striving to achieve their educational and career goals.”
