City to test public trash compactors

Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline will announce details of a pilot program for state-of-the-art, solar-powered “Big Belly” trash compactors on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Dexter Training Ground on Parade Street in South Providence.

The public trash compactor helps reduce litter by compacting trash to one-quarter of its original size. City officials will demonstrate the “Big Belly,” which is currently being used in cities and towns across the country, including Boston and New York.

Representatives from the Needham, Mass.-based company will also be on hand at the news conference.
