Woonsocket-based CVS Corp. recently announced that total sales for the four-week period ended Feb. 28 increased 7.3 percent to $2.13 billion, compared to $1.98 billion in the prior year period, according to a Business Wire press release.
Same store sales (sales from stores open more than one year) for the four weeks ended Feb. 28 increased 5.4 percent over the prior year period. Pharmacy same store sales increased 7.5 percent, while front-end same store sales increased 1 percent. Total pharmacy sales represented 68.9 percnt of total company sales in February.

Year-to-date, total sales for the eight-week period ended Feb. 28 increased 7.1 percent to $4.17 billion, compared to $3.89 billion in 2003. Same store sales for the eight-week period increased 5.5 percent over the prior year period. Pharmacy same store sales increased 7.9 percent, while front-end same store sales increased 0.4 percent.
Tom Ryan, chairman, president, and chief executive officer, stated, “I am pleased with our February sales results, particularly in light of the fact that the incidence of flu-related prescriptions across the industry declined more than 40 percent during the month. Both our front-end and pharmacy businesses are experiencing growing customer counts and healthy overall performance.”
As of Feb. 28, CVS operated 4,182 retail and specialty pharmacy stores in 32 states and the District of Columbia.
